Hinton was established in 1958, and is located just 270 km. west of Edmonton and 80 km. east of the Jasper townsite. Hinton has developed in two separate areas, about 5 km. apart, known to residents as the Hill and the Valley - separated by the pulp mill. This geographical dispersion is accounted for by the fact that Hinton actually started out as two communities - Drinnan and Hinton - which amalgamated many years ago. Hinton has developed over the last four decades with the establishment of a pulp mill in the 50's and modern coal mines in the 70's and 80's. The mill is one of the most up-to-date and profitable pulp mills in the country, having undergone expansion and modernization over the last few years.
Hinton is located in the heart of a paradise for recreation and has something to offer everyone! The centrally located recreation complex has two arenas, an indoor swimming pool complete with sauna and spa, racquetball and squash courts, and a fitness room. Hinton has ball diamonds, soccer pitches, parks, and two small lakes with hiking paths and an 18-hole golf course within its boundaries.
While in Hinton, you can also enjoy a world class cross country ski track, hiking trails, and some of the best trout fishing around! Whether you are an outdoors sportsman, out to get closer to nature or out to enjoy a family vacation, the mountains, lakes and forests will beacon you to come back time and again.
Today, Hinton has a population just over 9,000 people and it's land mass covers nearly 26 square kilometers.
